Where do Black Americans volunteer?

Historically Black colleges and universities report the highest levels of student service (61 percent), compared with residential colleges (40 percent) and liberal arts colleges (38 percent).28

Older African Americans (over age 65) have a higher rate of organizational membership than their White counterparts, especially those who are associated with a church or recreational clubs.29

The Black church remains one of the most important venues for Black civic participation: 70 percent of Black churches operate at least one civic program, almost 60 percent operate two programs, and nearly half operate three or more civic programs.30
